Introduction to Tamil Language
Tamil is a Dravidian Language spoken by more than 74 million people worldwide. The language is officially used by the Governments of India, Singapore and Sri Lanka.
Tamil has an unbroken literary tradition of over two thousand years. Not much has changed in the language over these many years, with the result that the children of today speak it exactly as it was spoken two thousand years ago.
The Tamil script is syllabic in nature. There are twelve vowels, eighteen consonants and one character - the aytam - in Tamil Script. (This character is neither a consonant nor a vowel.) Thus there are 31 letters that have an independent form, and together with an additional 216 combinant letters, complete the script.
